Whatcom Young Professionals is and always will be focused on creating opportunity for everyone. The importance of Black lives is not a political stance, but rather an indisputable statement.
In Whatcom County, Black business and community leaders should be valued and recognized for the significant contribution they have made and continue to make to our society as a whole. The recent deaths of Breonna Taylor, Manuel Ellis, George Floyd and more have brought many of us into the conversation that has long been ongoing. Racism hurts individuals, families, and the community as a whole. We are overdue for action.
This is the time to hold ourselves and each other accountable.
Whatcom YP strives to be a place for all people, with zero tolerance for racism and discrimination. We value the safety and well-being of our Black members and participants. The work for equity is an ongoing process. As an organization we need to recognize how we have participated in unjust systems before we can create a truly inclusive space. We encourage our members to join us in this effort to create a culture that uplifts all young professionals in our community.
We all have a responsibility to interrupt racial inequality and injustice. This call to action isn’t going to magically fix anything… but internal reflection and changing our behaviors is a step in the right direction. Together we create what is possible.
We welcome your participation, support, and accountability in this process. Stay tuned for opportunities to engage in a supportive peer environment. The Whatcom YP Advisory Council recognizes that we are in a position to hold space for conversations regarding Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. We are currently working on programming for our members, as well as anyone else that would like to join us. If you have any ideas to help us in this effort, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
